On the Road…Again

What a blur this summer has been!We finished swimming lessons in August. Max moved to the next level! He has learned so much and gained a lot of confidence.

We finished harvesting our flax last week and are preparing to leave to our next job in Harrold, SD about 34 miles northeast of Pierre, SD. We have corn and sunflowers to harvest early next week.

I have been busy canning as much as possible and trying to keep up with everything else. We haven’t had any days off so we’ve been eating a lot of meals in the field. I have made freezer corn, several new recipes of pickles, relishes, crab apple jelly, tomato and peach salsa, and canned tomatoes. August is usually our busiest month it feels like all I do is run in circles. It’s been so dry here I’ve been dragging hoses all over the yard for our garden and newly planted apple and plum trees. The garden is coming to an end and we should have frost by the weekend. I normally would cover my plants and try to get a few more weeks but since we are leaving I will be pulling everything today and try to finish up with the canning by tomorrow.

Peaches & Sophie — How is that comfortable? They have a procedure for getting in. If Sophie is in first Peaches seems to demand Sophie to get out so she can get in and have her favorite spot.

Harvest at Home

This is a sunset we enjoyed as we were waiting for a pilot car in road construction on our way home. It took us 2 days to get home from South Dakota due to all the road construction.

What a busy couple of weeks it has been since we arrived home. Mick made 2 more trips back to South Dakota to retrieve equipment. Max had swimming lessons everyday for a week he even went off the diving board 4 out of 5 days. We start swimming lessons again this Monday. He has become a lot more comfortable with the water on his head. He has never liked water on his face or washing his hair in the tub and the lessons have helped him tremendously.

We have also been busy mowing, weeding, picking raspberries, checking fields, shampooing carpets, cleaning up equipment, preparing equipment for harvest at home, cleaning grain bins, laundry and unloading trailers. The camper still needs to be unloaded but for the most part we are ready to harvest at home.

Friday night I heard Peaches crying like she was hurt on the far side of our farm. We found her stuck under some poles on the ground out in the trees. She must have chased something in but was unable to get out. She was so scared. Mick dug a hole in the ground with a shovel and she was free and very excited to be out!

I have made 2 batches of raspberry freezer jam and will attempt raspberry jelly next per Mick’s request. I’ve made many jellies but never raspberry, hopefully it turns out good. Freezer jam really can’t be beat as far as the fresh fruit taste.

Our barley was swathed earlier this week.

We started harvesting our barley today.

Pond Creek, OK

We are moving to Pond Creek, OK today. The combine, header and one of our trucks moved yesterday. Pond Creek is about 115 miles from Pratt, KS and about 20 miles from Enid, OK which is probably where we will stay. The kids were able to enjoy the pool for a while yesterday. Our dogs were very happy to get in the air-conditioned camper.

There is oil & natural gas drilling and lots of harvesters in the area. We have a job to start as soon as we arrive. The high today is supposed to be 94°.
