Catch The Moment Week #23

Our planting season has come to an end and now it is time to watch for issues and control what we can.  We will be preparing to head south to Ness City, Kansas.  We’ve had some interesting weather this week which usually means amazing sunsets.  Here are my pics for the week…

Day-156

Wednesday evening we were on our way home from 4-H with severe weather warnings surrounding us.  A tornado was spotted west of us along the border, but did not touch down.  This photo is looking west towards Calvin, ND.  We had rain and ugly clouds, but that was it.

Day-157

The boys had fun flying a kite until it got stuck in a tree.

Day-158

Sometimes the sky is more colorful after the sun sets, this was one of those nights.

Day-159

These 2 Mallards have hung out in our ditch all spring and are most likely the same pair we see every year.  This is the same ditch as the previous picture.

Day-160

Sunday as we were trying to finish seeding we had strong winds with big rain drops interrupt our work briefly.  Sven & Ricardo hung out with Max & Sadie under the tractor after lunch until it quit.

Day-161

We found baby ducks in our ditch!  The parents are above.  I haven’t seen them since I took this picture.  Peaches, our brown dog came home wet later that afternoon.  I am hoping she didn’t eat them and they took cover, but we have not spotted them anywhere. Sad smile

Day-162

Here comes trouble! We set Brett loose on Max’s four wheeler for the first time!  Mick turned it all the way down.  Brett did a great job and wore a big smile the entire time.  The big brother came out in Max who had to stop Brett once in a while to share some pointers.

Catch The Moment Week #22

I can’t believe May is over and June is already here!  Normally we are gone south harvesting by now.  Due to problems with the winter wheat and canola in Oklahoma we have not left.  We are still seeding our crop at home due to some wet fields.  Max had Vacation Bible School this week so everyday I had to run for that.  They did a wonderful job and had so much fun!  This week went super fast for me! Here are my pics…

Day-149

Unloading our soybean seed into the auger for the drill.

Day-150

Miss Mollie-Jayne hung out with us all day.

Day-151

One of our colorful sunsets from the week.

Day-152

The winter wheat in North Dakota didn’t fare so well either.  We had to work 2 quarters under due to winter kill.  We’ll be planting beans now.

Day-153.1

Planting at sunset.

Day-154

Miss Sadie enjoyed hunting and soaking up the sun every time we ran to the field.

Day-155

My dahlias are putting on quite a show this week!

Catch The Moment Week #21 May 21–27, 2014

Lots going on around here this week.  We planted sweet corn, brown and golden flax and started our soybeans.  We were shut down for a day or 2 due to rain, but for the most part it was a smooth sailing week!

Day-142

The boys played with their niece on the ‘sand hill’ in the afternoon.  Mollie-Jayne was not thrilled with the sand.  She cried most of the time she was touching it.

Day-143

These 2 make me laugh.  Sven (left) & Ricardo (right) were vacuuming out the drill.  We were switching from brown flax to golden flax so everything had to be super clean.  They thought it was so funny I was taking their picture.  Sven is here from South Africa and Ricardo is from Brazil.  They will be with us until November.

Day-144

Break downs are normal on a farm.  Today it was the rock picker.  Mick was welding the piece that holds the axle on.

Day-145

We went to Hannah to mow the yard where the guys will be staying.  This was the sunset as we finished.

Day-146

We planted lots of sweet corn – 3 varieties!  The guys are checking for proper spacing and depth.  A few adjustments were made and many rows were planted!

Day-147

We had a beautiful night for supper in the field.  Brett was having so much fun kicking up dust with no shoes.

Day-148

A local bar and grill started serving food again!  I picked up Indian tacos for supper, they are bread dough disks fried with taco fixings on top.  They did a great job for their first night serving food!  Ricardo had a good seat in the tire.  It was pretty windy that night.
